Wat is bekend?
  • In Belgium, abortion is allowed and reimbursed through health insurance until 14 weeks of pregnancy. 
  • Women with pregnancies >14 weeks must travel abroad for abortion and cover the cost themselves.
Wat is nieuw?
  • Two to three percent of abortion requests are related to pregnancies >14 weeks.
  • Pregnant women who seek abortions after 14 weeks are more likely to belong to a vulnerable group: <20 years old, low-educated, and unemployed.

Introduction

In Belgium, abortion at the request of the woman is possible during the first 14 weeks of pregnancy (calculated from the first day of the last menstrual period). Legal restrictions on abortion during the second trimester of pregnancy lead to medical tourism in neighboring countries.
