How do patients respond to a green prescription?
- Nature exposure has a positive effect on physical and mental health.
- It is recommended to spend at least two hours per week in a green environment: walking, exercising, reading, eating, sitting on a bench.
- A ‘green prescription’ or referral for regular contact with nature is complementary to current therapy and prevention approaches.
- Patients are receptive to a ‘green prescription’ from their general practitioner and appreciate this form of lifestyle advice.
Introduction
Exposure to nature reduces symptoms of stress, burnout, sleep problems, depression, and shows positive effects on high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, and chronic pain.1,2 These are all conditions that are prevalent and could benefit from additional approaches for management.
