Wat is bekend?
- One in seven people in Belgium has used an e-cigarette.
- Unlike tobacco cigarettes, which burn, e-cigarettes heat up liquid to produce an aerosol without carcinogenic tar.
- Currently, e-cigarettes are available in over 7,000 flavors.
Wat is nieuw?
- Not all flavors used in e-cigarettes are harmless.
- The flavorings diacetyl and acetylpropionyl, which are potentially toxic when inhaled, were found in 27 of the 64 e-liquids with caramel and buttery flavors that were studied.
- Flavorings with potentially genotoxic activity were found in 12 of the 153 e-liquids that were studied.
Introduction
The use of e-cigarettes as an alternative to traditional tobacco cigarettes is becoming more and more popular. The latest Health Survey by Sciensano (2018) shows that 15.5% of the Belgian population has already used an e-cigarette. The main reasons for using this alternative are to quit smoking, reduce smoking, and enjoy the experience of smoking an e-cigarette.1
